Some of the rhythms that you will come across are syncopated. Syncopation is when a note is played on an "off" beat (weak beat) and held over to an "on" (strong beat). This gives the rhythm an anticipated feel and is most common in modern music.

Syncopation can be used with different feels and time signatures. In a swing piece the syncopated notes can feel even more anticipated and dynamic. Funk styles are often play with syncopated sixteenth-note patterns.
