Rest-stroke is a right hand finger style which is a major part of classical guitar technique and bass guitar technique. It involves alternating two fingers with most players using their index and middle fingers. Your thumb remains independent of the alternating fingers so it can play bass notes as required. This technique is called rest-stroke because each finger comes to rest on the next string which stops it from ringing.
