The free-stroke technique involves playing the strings individually without resting your fingers on any other string. The advantage of this is that more than one note can sound together which is good for playing arpeggios and chords.

You will notice that the thumb moves down across the bass strings but the fingers move up.

Three-note patterns are easily produced using you thumb, index and middle fingers. Four-note patterns include:

  • Thumb, index, middle, index

  • Thumb, index, middle, ring
